A short history

Cebu Province

Cebu is widely regarded as the birthplace of Christianity in the Philippines, marked by Ferdinand Magellan's 1521 arrival and the planting of Magellan's Cross. It later grew into the country's first Spanish settlement and capital, Villa San Miguel, under Miguel López de Legazpi in 1565. Centuries of trade turned Cebu City into the "Queen City of the South," a hub linking the central Visayas to the rest of the archipelago. Today the province blends that colonial-era heritage — centuries-old churches, forts, and plazas — with the rolling hills of Busay and Toledo, and the white-sand islands of Bantayan, Malapascua, and Camotes just offshore.
